Emily Allen Paine, PhD

Assistant Professor of Clinical Medical Sociology (in Psychiatry), Columbia University Irving Medical Center

Email: ep2982@cumc.columbia.edu

Dr. Emily Paine studies how ideas about gender and sexuality are shaping minority health and well-being across social contexts. She has investigated LGBTQ experiences of healthcare, LGBTQ care-seeking strategies, and lesbian women's sexual health. She is particularly interested in how gender and sexuality are conceptualized and deployed among community and healthcare organizations and across social networks, as well as how different social schemas facilitate or become barriers to care for sexual and gender minorities seeking to avoid stress and stigma. She is also interested in how different community, medical, and governmental actors construct and negotiate knowledge about sexual health and HIV in order to collaboratively design and implement novel interventions that connect key populations with information, resources, and care.
